Procurement Strategies Review
Competition is fierce in todayââ¬â¢s world and a business must work smarter versus harder. Many big name chain stores have achieved success but none like that of Wal-Mart. The following is a review of the Wal-Mart customer and his or her expectations of its procurement process. An additional review of how these expectations affect Wal-Martââ¬â¢s strategies, policies, and procedures at both the domestic and global level is also included. Customers Internal An internal customer is anyone you count on or rely upon to complete a task or a function or to provide you with information so that you can get your job doneâ⬠¦ and anyone who counts on you to complete a task or function or to provide them with information so that they can get their job doneâ⬠(Earl, 2004, para. 3). In Wal-Martââ¬â¢s distribution centers, the individual stores are the internal customer. Each department within a store counts on store management to make certain orders are places and received timely. Store management counts on the employees to keep the individual department in order for the external customers. Wal-Martââ¬â¢s external customers are almost exclusively the public. Through Wal-Martââ¬â¢s three operating branches, Wal-Mart stores, Samââ¬â¢s Club, and Wal-Mart International, the organization focuses on supplying its customers with merchandise ranging from produce to tires at a bargain price. This is the expectation of the customer, to receive the best product at the lowest possible price. Wal-Mart is capable of procuring material at reduced costs and passing these savings to its customers. Wal-Martââ¬â¢s unique ability to force concessions from suppliers further reduces costs and delivers the demands of their customers, more products for less cost. Procurement expectations Wal-Martââ¬â¢s procurement expectations from suppliers are some of the strictest among retailers. The Global Procurement division was created to manage Wal-Martââ¬â¢s global suppliers by creating supplier partnerships, sourcing new products, and managing the supply chain. As Wal-Mart continues to grow, the sustainability of the company and the environmental issues are important to the current and future criteria suppliers must follow. Suppliers are expected to follow Wal-Martââ¬â¢s move in reducing waste and potential harmful products on the environment. Suppliers are also expected to be knowledgeable of their industry to meet customer quality and price expectations. Influence on strategies and policies Domestic The customers are the biggest influence Wal-Mart faces when developing its strategies, policies, and procedures domestically. Wal-Mart brings these low prices to customers in two main ways. If a supplier cannot meet Wal-Martââ¬â¢s expectations, Wal-Mart then finds another supplier that will. The second method Wal-Mart uses to keep its prices low is through the low wages of its employees. When Wal-Mart opened its doors in the 1970s, 70% of its workforce was made up of women (Kaufman, 2009). Wal-Mart knew loyalty of its employees was important to the longevity of the organization. To reach that loyalty Wal-Mart replaced benefits such as health care, pensions, and higher wages for fancy titles like associate and broadcasted an open door policy (Kaufman, 2009). Global The retailing giant has declared its desire to give the customer products at the lowest cost possible, with the fastest lead times, and best quality. Wal-Mart has not wavered in its determination to do exactly what it envisioned. The company is using the Global Merchandising Centers (GMC) to promote sourcing of Wal-Mart brands, and aligning of merchandising efficiencies. ââ¬Å"By realigning our resources, leveraging our scale and restructuring our relationship with suppliers, we will enable our businesses around the world to offer even more competitive pricing on merchandise and to provide our customers a clear and compelling assortment of better quality products at lower pricesâ⬠(Purchasing b2b, 2010, para. 5). Wal-Martââ¬â¢s process Wal-Mart has a very large procurement operation as the leading retailer in the world. Wal-Mart had a contract with a third party procurement firm in Asia. The firm used suppliers that would mark-up merchandise and resell that merchandise to Wal-Mart. The company has reduced costs, lead times, and eliminated the middleman mark-ups. In 2002, Wal-Mart began to buy directly from the manufacturer to procure a better price. According to Stundza, (2006), ââ¬Å" Wal-Mart has global procurement and supplier alignment teams responsible for identifying new suppliers, sourcing new products, building partnerships with existing suppliers, and managing the global supply chain of Wal-Martââ¬â¢s direct imports. Figure 1: Wal-Martââ¬â¢s Procurement Process Conclusion Wal-Mart is the leader in its industry and continues to grow in popularity among the consumer. The reason for its growth in popularity is its promise to deliver quality products at low prices. Wal-Mart can influence its suppliers in a way that ensures a low price on the products it sells. Wal-Mart expects its suppli ers to follow its lead in giving the customer what he or she expects and will continue to grow in consumer popularity as a result. References Earl, D., (2004). Linguistic Diversity in Early Childhood Education Essay
One issue of linguistic diversity, is you has the teacher needs to identify the needs of the children in your classroom. A teacher needs to address their own attitude toward the children and families that are linguistic and cultural diversity. If a teacher knows that most of the students are going to Spanish speaking, for example than she needs to prepare herself for this before schools starts. A teacher may want to get with other teachers at the school or school district and talk about ways to deal with non-English speaking children and families. I think another issues with linguistic diversity is that the teacher needs to expect has much out of the non-English speaking students as the English speaking students. If a teacher starts off expecting less than she will get just that. A teacher needs to monitor herself and meet with other teachers and discuss observations, progress and the way that students are tested and evaluated so that the teachers are not setting them up to fail. All students need to think that they can progress and not fail at everything. I think and issue of not being able to communicate with the families is a big issue for everyone. The families feel uncomfortable coming to the schools, especially if they do not have a translator with them or their child has to do the translating. The teachers feel uncomfortable because they do not know if they are getting the right information to the parents. So I think the community needs to come together and try to think of ways to solve this problem so our children will feel more comfortable at school and more valued. Teachers need to support cultural diversity by recognizing the importance of a childââ¬â¢s home language (Linguistic Diversity and Early Literacy). The best way to do this is to involve families and invite them to the classroom so they feel comfortable. Have the families reading to Linguistic Diversity in Early Childhood Education The children in the classroom in the home language than have another parent read the same book in their home language. I think the more that we as educators get these families together the better so that they do not feel so isolated. We as educators need to teach all our parents to be the first teacher for their child. We need to give all families the tools so that parents can become their childââ¬â¢s primary teacher and that way we all can become full partners in their childââ¬â¢s education. The Early Head Start article that I read is a very good example of what we need to do as an early intervention. I like Head Start because they give you specific guidelines and ways to do things that everyone can follow. I think the earlier that we get children and families focused on their children and their role in the childââ¬â¢s life as their teacher the better off we all are. Hiring bilingual staff may be one option on preserving the childââ¬â¢s native language and to ensure that information is shared in a timely manner. Ensure that staff is aware of cultural issues and differences provide an opportunity for staff to learn another language to communicate with the families. Language isnââ¬â¢t just about the child it is also about the family has a whole. References Otto, Beverly, 3rd ed. Networks and The Tokugawa Period Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Networks and The Tokugawa Period - Essay Example This put the Japanese society at the same development level with the European societies of that time. Although the governance in Japan then was full of corruption, inequality and lack of justice, Iceman argues that the network revolution that came during this time led to the improved forms of transport and communication improving trade and economic activities of the area. It also improved freedom and general interaction between people from different backgrounds bringing about unity. Depicting evidence from the books ââ¬Å"Proving the Way conflict and practice in the history of Japanese Nativismâ⬠, by Mark McNally and ââ¬Å"Bonds of Civility Aesthetic Networks and the Political Origins of Japanese Cultureâ⬠, by Eiko Ikegami we discover that one of the networks important to the Tokugawa people was the aesthetic horizantal network. This aesthetic horizontal network culminated from the fields of art and also in the political world in the Tokugawa era. These horizontal network s were associated with seated arts (Za), Linked Verse (renga). For example, linked verse events, occasions and ceremonies were carried out in the shade of cherry blossoms (hana no moto renga). This gatherings were considered sacred and and therefore were linked with their higher deities. Another important network was the vertical networks which were in harmony with the belief of muen. This allowed people who had different social standings in the Japanese society or individuals from varying social classes to gather together and partake in poetry sessions with no special treatment being offered to anyone. Another good example of these vertical networks was the popularity of the wild, unbounded and radical dancing that was practiced by these Japanese people which were orchestrated by sanctified madness known as (Kuruu). This dancing through vertical networks had spread through the Japanese community due to the vertical networks. In 1603, Tokugawa defeated his adversaries and he started an empire which prolonged till 1868. Over 260 years, peace has prevailed in japan, whereby lhe started Edo, which marked the beginning of Kanto. Tokugawa regime reigned supreme via complex unions having 250 lords, some closely related to Tokugawa. Each retained its own cities and as a rule, some cities maintained a high caliber, of socio-economic and heritage autonomy. In town areas, various cultures and trends sprung up such as sumo wrestling, geisha entertainers, and karate and kabuki drama that all originated from urbanization hence making the japan towns to be at an advantage over the Europeans in development, but still yet japan were short of political prowess in accordance to their socio-economic and heritage gains. Within the horizontal and vertical networks people practiced poetry, theatre, painting, Ikebana, tea making, Bonsai, poetry in form of Joruri, calligraphy and music. During this period, their practices were lesser subjected to beliefs and religion. Their practices were not based on their religion and their belief in spirit sand magic as it was with their predecessors. In the Tokugawa aesthetic network they practiced a lot of arts. Artists began to commercialize their practice whereby they sharpened their skills and began to make money out of their works. This was due to the commercialization of various activities during this period. Tokugawa social dynasties and social quo started

Managing Financial Resources in Health and Social Care Essay - 1
Managing Financial Resources in Health and Social Care - Essay Example Be very precise and detailed on the demands you want from each stakeholder, link stakeholdersââ¬â¢ interest with your aims, and prioritize. In the BUPA report, they work with the government and other organization to aid in aligning the agenda and long-term policies. BUPA Company should involve all the stakeholders for the proper costing to be enhanced. (Baker 2007,pg.125).à à The principle of consistency This principle needs the following of a similar procedure and in case of any change then an explanation to the effect is therefore ideal. BUPA Care Homes should ensure that the auditors follow similar steps in the preparation of the financial statements, without this, any change might make correct interpretation of the financial data impossible (Haldane 2011, pg 134). Principle of Transparency This principle states that for effective costing, it requires openness and honesty visibility in all transactions, ensuring that all information on procurement procedures, opportunities , and processes are well outline and publicized. In BUPA Care Homes, transparency is seen when the Directors read out the annual reports and the audited financial statements (Higgins 2004, pg 118). The materiality concept An item is considered material it affects the decision making process of the users. This is the case when the material is not stated correctly or it is omitted. Materiality concept explains that costing considers the tangibility of an item and the processes involved. In BUPA Care Homes, costing should focus on the tangibility that is attached to the residential homes and the health care service. An error that is too minor to affect anyoneââ¬â¢s knowledge of the accounts is immaterial. In the accounts preparation, tangibility and intangibility of an item should be considered, so that resources do not go to waste in the pursuit of further detail. This is usually a very subjective exercise (Field 2007, pg. 105). Objectivity: This principle requires that an accounta nt should work with the view of promoting the aims. They should be showing high levels of neutrality while executing their duties. The accountants not be biased in their operations. This therefore means that they should keep of implementing their personal responses and wishes. They should be straightforward and focused to the facts as the case guarantees. BUPA Company should ensure that the accountants prepare detailed financial statements that are simple and easy to analyze. The accountants should therefore adopt and implement neutral grounds during the analysis of the financial data and statements (Armstrong 2004, pg 46). Causality principle: In many costing exercises, it has always been noted that the cost of payment for any event or service has a relationship with its cause. The nature of the cause therefore is used in the appropriate allocation and budgeting. BUPA should use this principle; do costing after doing proper investigation and coming with the correct findings about t he cause of an occurrence so at to reduce the chances of subjectivity. This is almost similar to the principle of the proximate cause in the cannons of insurance that states clearly that for one to be compensated; the risk that has occurred must relate directly with the property insured. In insurance the compensation cost is usually based on the amount of loss and the premiums paid are based on the nature of the property to be insured (Britton 2007, pg 34). Data accuracy principle The cost of an item is always charged after the
Electronic government Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Electronic government - Essay Example The commencement of the new system of e-government can be simply linked to its purpose (Kostopoulos, 2003). The development in technology has gbrought new challenges in governments facilitating its emergence. The purpose of electronic government is to build the complete digital age and work as the best intermediary for the information through whole the state. Choudrie et al (2004) refer the purpose of e-government, to the emerging need to improve the external and internal relationship with the stakeholder and share the knowledge with them. Meanwhile, Bwoma and Huang (2003) highlight another purpose of e-government, which is to cut cost. It should be noted that there is an increase of government expenditure in building more offices and agencies around the country to provide the government services to the citizen and mismanagement and poor organization which will affect the whole public expenditure. E-government cut cost by making operations constrained online. Information technologies has been widely used in institutions either public or private sector. So, the governments are eagerly looking toward an information technology to improve their services and relationships. Gong further; it is useful identify the meaning of e-government. Kostopoulos (2003) has mentioned that the use of web technologies will force improving the interaction and the communication between the government and its users. Moreover, the internet will be the best solution for government to establish an agencies opened for 24/365 to serve there customers. Similar to this definition, Zhenyu and Peterson (2003) note that e-government are those technologies which help the government to establish a new line of services to deliver to the citizen and help the citizen to interact with those services and access information. Provision of such services will reduce the need to directly contact the

The Value of Money Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
The Value of Money - Essay Example Compound interest is different from the simple interest on the grounds that it takes into account the accumulated interest that has to be paid over the years and the principle for compound interest assumes that interest should also be paid on the accumulated interest. Compounding can be done annually, semi-annually or quarterly depending upon the circumstances. Using compounding interest method, there are gigantic changes in the amount of interest that is received. The amount of interest gained, when comparing the gains from the compound interest method to the simple interest, magnifies to an enormous extent. When calculating future value transactions, the value increases by a greater extent. The concept of time value of money can be termed as the foundation of the field of finance. This concept talks about the increase in the value of money with the passage of time; Which means that the dollar that you hold in your hand right now, is worth more than it will be worth in the future, the reason being that you can conveniently invest it somewhere and earn additional money over that dollar. Another important concept that the time value of money put forward is, that the future value of the principal amount and the interest collected over a period of time can be summarized into a value today; just like you can calculate the value to which a certain amount of money today will convert into on a future date. Mortgage loans are Mortgage loans are an example of the proper application of the time value of money; reasons being the loans are given by deciding the series of future payments that are to be paid to the lender for a house that is bought. More interest is paid in the beginning because the procedure follows compounding interest method. In this case, with each payment, as the principle amount to be returned decreases, the interest that has to be paid on it decreases too. The terms that are being used to give off the loan are of immense importance; more terms mean more compounding of the loan, resulting in extra payment of interest. This law holds true for varying interest rates as well. As the terms are increased, consequently the interest rates increase too. There is a multiple effect on the payments of interest when both the factors increase. Bond Prices and Interest Rates At a glance, one would feel that there should be a direct relationship between the interest rates and bond prices. However, there exists a negative relationship between the two and this seems highly inappropriate. Bonds actually pay a certain amount of money over a period of time till the bond matures (Ken, 2008). To understand the inverse relationship between the two, let us consider the zero-coupon bonds which give no coupons but their value is determined by the difference in the value at the time of purchase to the time of maturity (Ken, 2008). As bonds provide a set interest over them, when the interest rates of the market increase from the set interest on the bond, the value of the bond has to be decreased to such an extent that the yield becomes equal to the market interest rate. Critical Analysis Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Critical Analysis Paper - Essay Example Moreover, Chaffeeââ¬â¢s The Philosopherââ¬â¢s Way discusses the various philosophersââ¬â¢ view of the world, the nature of reality, and the truth (2012, 51). By using Kants Categorical Imperative and utilitarian views, morality is relative to humansââ¬â¢ rationale of right and wrong. Immanuel Kantââ¬â¢s Categorical Imperative Kant is the main proponent of a critical type of philosophy known as the categorical imperative. Human beings have the tendency to evaluate their actions based on their emotions towards the acts they committed. This means that it is hard to assess the goodness or badness and rightfulness and wrongness of an action because of the difficulty to find a basis for logically and objectively judging this particular action. Kant helped us in understanding and explaining our actions and decisions based on a given principle known as a priori judgment, in which all knowledge presupposes an experience. It is in this line of thought that Kant differentiated mo ral judgments from empirical ones. Empirical judgments refer to judging facts of which experience teaches us, while moral judgment tells us what we ought and not ought to do. Empirical judgment does not relate to the understanding of moral action. What Kant meant by a priori judgment also entails a judgment of necessity which judges an act based on universal standards of right and wrong, such as stealing is wrong in any circumstances. Categorical Imperative is considered by Kant as the universal principle of justice that right is superior to good applicable to the whole universe. He postulates that humans must act based on universally accepted maxims which also apply as laws for all of the humanity. Kant believes that moral rules are universal. Therefore, what is allowed for a single person is also allowed for everybody, and what is prohibited for one is also prohibited for the rest. Moreover, what is obligatory for one is also obligatory for the rest. He also acknowledges freedom o r autonomy along all individuals, but this autonomy must rest on positive values and will serve as a guiding law for all our actions. The word imperative in his philosophy provides us with some sort of restriction which limits our actions that are grounded on personal interests and selfishness which moral rules considered universally wrong. Simply saying, actions that are morally wrong universally regardless of the means or ends are considered to be morally wrong and nothing else, while morally right actions that are universally accepted are also morally right. In other words, Kant suggests that life is composed only of two colors, black and white, and that there is no extent to which an action can be considered better or worse because it only falls into two categories. White lies are wrong under any circumstances because they are still considered as lies, and lying is universally wrong in any event. Principle of Utilitarianism Jeremy Bentham, in his Principles of Morals and Legisla tion, conveys rationality in his analysis of ââ¬Ëthe greatest happiness systemââ¬â¢ or the so-called ââ¬Ëmeans-endââ¬â¢. Other philosophers describe happiness as a goal, a result while Bentham describes happiness as simply a pleasure without the pain. In other words, people can quantify the value of pleasure or pain depending on the magnitude and for how long. According to Bentham, the overall good of the society is dependent
